Liberia-flagged container Reported Sinking:
On 23 May 25 a Liberia-flagged container vessel, #MSCELSA3, reported tilting of its ship soon after departing #Vizhinjam port and 38 miles from Kochi, seeking urgent assistance. Indian Coast Guard is coordinating conduct of Rescue operations while maintaining ships in area and aircraft overhead the distressed vessel. 09 of the 24 crew onboard have abandoned the ship and are in liferafts, while rescue operations for remaining 15 are underway.
Indian Coast Guard #MRCC, #Mumbai received a Distress Alert regarding Liberia-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3 developing 26° list approx 38 nautical miles southwest of #Kochi. Vessel departed #Vizhinjam Port on 23 May 25, bound for #Kochi with ETA 24 May 25. #ICG is actively coordinating rescue operations, with ships in vicinity and aircraft deployed overhead to monitor and assist. Out of 24 crew onboard, 21 have been rescued. To support evacuation, #ICG aircraft have deployed additional liferafts near the listing vessel. DG Shipping, in coordination with #ICG, has issued urgent directives to the ship’s managers to initiate salvage operations to stabilize the vessel and avert further risks. #ICG continues to closely monitor the situation to ensure the safety of the crew and to prevent any environmental damages.

21 crew members rescued, 03 crew members (Captain, Chief Engineer & 2nd Engineer) remain onboard to assist planned salvage operation. Indian Coast Guard ships & aircraft continue monitoring the situation. Some containers have fallen due to listing; risk assessment underway. All efforts are in hand to maintain stability of the Vessel.
