THE WORLD'S HIGHEST RAILWAY BRIDGE :
Honourable Prime Minister of India 🇮🇳 inaugurated the Chenab Railway Bridge which is the highest Railway Arch Bridge in the world on 6th June, 2025 at Reasi in Jammu and Kashmir, India 🇮🇳, stands at 359 meter height above the Chenab River with a cost of Rupees 1,486 crore.
This engineering marvel, towering 35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower, connects Jammu to Srinagar.
Designed to withstand Earthquake up to 8 magnitude Richter Scale and winds up to 260 k.m.p.h.
It is 1.315--k.m.--long Bridge.Its connect Jammu with Kashmir Valley.this bridge was made by Konkan railway corporation by Indian railways.After inauguration by PM Modi the bridge has been opened for regular rail traffic.

With a total length of 1,315 meters, it is a vital link on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India.
Engineering and Design:
The Chenab Bridge is a marvel of steel and concrete architecture. Its main structure is a two-ribbed steel arch, the first of its kind in India, spanning 467 meters across the river gorge. The bridge’s design is engineered to endure extreme environmental conditions, including high winds up to 266 km/h and seismic activity equivalent to magnitude 8 on the Richter scale. To ensure safety and durability, the bridge uses 63mm-thick blast-resistant steel and concrete-filled steel box piers, with a special corrosion-resistant paint that lasts up to 15 years, far surpassing the typical lifespan of similar coatings in India.
The design process drew from international standards, with BS 5400 serving as the primary guideline. Wind tunnel tests conducted by Norway’s Force Technology Laboratory informed the bridge’s ability to withstand severe wind pressures and gust buffeting. The seismic analysis was performed in collaboration with IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee, while stability analysis was conducted by ITASCA and IIT Delhi.
Construction Challenges and Innovations:
Constructing the Chenab Bridge was a formidable challenge due to its remote, mountainous location and harsh weather. The site’s isolation required the establishment of on-site workshops and the local generation of electricity. Water was transported via pipes from the river, and materials were moved using some of the world’s largest cable cranes and derricks.
The project involved the use of approximately 28,660 tonnes of steel, 66,000 cubic meters of concrete, and 84 kilometers of bolts and cables. The steel was supplied by the Steel Authority of India, and the painting contract was awarded to AkzoNobel. The construction was carried out in phases, with the arch completed by April 2021 and the entire bridge finished by August 2022. The first trial runs took place in June 2024, and the bridge was officially inaugurated for rail traffic on June 6, 2025.
Strategic and Social Importance:
